Boy Scout Troop 1572

  • December 10, 2013December 17, 2013

By Ian Wilmoth

Boy Scout Troop 1572, located nearby in Clinton, is a very active organization. The Boy Scouts welcome boys from 11 to 17 years old to join in camping, hiking, biking, backpacking, serving the community, and becoming prepared for anything life can throw at them. Last year, Scouts from Troop 1572 went whitewater rafting, kayaking, and camping at Solomon’s Island, placed luminaries at Antietam National Battlefield, and camped in the snow at Harper’s Ferry! Very recently, many members of Troop 1572 who were 14 or older made the trip to the Philmont High Adventure Base in New Mexico for a week of backpacking in the Sangre de Cristo foothills. Past high adventure trips include canoeing in Maine, biking the C&O Canal towpath, and scuba diving at Florida Sea Base.

Cub Scout Pack 1572 is a very active Pack located in the same place as Troop 1572. Cub Scouting allows boys from 7 to 10 years old to participate in family camping, pinewood derby races, and learning about the outdoors. Each age group has its own Den. Recent pack activities include snow tubing at Liberty Mountain Resort, family camping at Solomon’s Island Naval Recreation Center, and cleaning up the biking trail at National Harbor with the help of the Troop.
Boy Scouting and Cub Scouting hold plenty of adventure!

Come to one of Troop 1572’s meetings! They are held every Wednesday from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., except the last one of the month, at St. Mary’s Church Hall, 13407 Piscataway Road, Clinton, MD 20735

PHCA Canoe Slip Usage Fee

  • March 9, 2013March 9, 2013

Leo J. Morawsky Canoe Pavilion at Lot 39 Waterfront Park

For those who may be unaware, the PHCA offers the use of a Canoe Rack which provides individual slips of up to 12 canoes or kayaks. The Canoe Rack was the idea of one of our past Board Members and residents, Leo Morowski, who passed away before the structure was built, but in whose name it is dedicated. To offset the cost of maintaining the structure and to ensure active slip usage (by residents who canoe several times annually), the PHCA Board has decided to assess annual fees of $20 per slip for PHCA members and $40 per slip for non-PHCA members. The fees will be implemented on the first Saturday of April 2013, the same day as the Annual Potomac River Clean-Up Event. The annual usage fee year will run from April 1 to March 31. Piscataway Hills residents who want to start or continue using one or more of the spaces on the canoe rack should contact PCHA Board Member Calvin O’Neil at the contact information below.

Current slip users will receive first preference to maintain your existing slip. The slip usage fee must be received no later than March 31 to maintain usage or your boat will need to be removed by April 6, 2013. Any boats left in an unpaid slip on April 6 will be determined to be abandoned and disposed of during the Annual Potomac River Clean-up event.

County Plans Improvements In Call System

  • October 10, 2011February 17, 2013

In response to concerns that non-emergency police calls were not being answered , a top county official told PHCA members that improvementswere in the works.

Charlynn Flaherty, Associate Director for Public Safety Communications, the featured speaker at the PHCA fall quarterly meeting on Sept. 20, explained that the county emergency call center handles all 911 calls, including police, medical, and fire emergencies. The office also handles burglar alarm calls. An average of 13 people on duty at all times handle a total of 1.6 million calls per year, she said.

Non-emergency callers should use 301-352-1200 or call Police District IV directly at 301-749-4901, Flaherty said. Outgoing PHCA President John Schnizlein said he had called the police non-emergency number to report an illegal trash dumper on Piscataway Drive but got no response. Flaherty replied that the average wait for a non-emergency call is 7-10 minutes, but that improvements were being planned by a new Public Safety Technology Working Group. Ideas under discussion include the use of social media, public safety databases, and a 311 public service line.
